Nuclear Deal with France

Government has not signed the commercial agreement with the French company AREVA for building two nuclear reactors at Jaitapur.

Safety is accorded the utmost priority in all aspects of nuclear power Reactors based on foreign cooperation are set up only after their safety is reviewed and certified by the regulatory authority in the vendor country and Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) in India. Such reactors are set up strictly in accordance with the stage-wise clearances accorded by the AERB after thorough reviews. Discussions on the techno-commercial aspects are directed towards the fundamental objective of ensuring a viable tariff of electricity to be generated by these reactors.

The Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions and Prim Minister’s Office Shri V.Narayansamy gave this information in reply to a written question in the Lok Sabha Sabha today.
